058: Growlithe

A dog is just about as predictable an addition to the Pokedex as a cat is. This very first dog is a bit of a cutie, leaning more towards the “rough and tough” kind of dog. I like most things about it, the tiger stripes are interesting and its got quite the fluff on it. The only thing really bothering me are its front paws not really matching the back ones. If you're gonna go for monstrous claws, just go all the way, man!

059: Arcanine

If you liked Growlithe, it sure was nice to have Arcanine be a gigantic companion dog that took the lovable parts of Growlithe and cranked them up to 11. Its hair is huge and ruffled, making it look extra-fluffy. And it is big. I mean, this dog is over 6 feet tall big. If you're a fan of the extra-large breeds of dog, Arcanine must be a treat. I like it on a base level of just liking dogs, and as a monster design it's executed plenty competently. I've not got a ton to say about it other than that, other than to point out it seemingly takes inspiration from those lion-dog-tiger guardian statues called a Shisa.
