It feels weird to say this about Girafarig of all things, but I've kinda warmed up to the thing a little bit over the years. Not a ton mind you, but still a bit. This odd unevolving Pokemon is relatively normal-looking up front, but then a stark change in color denotes its rear end that curiously has a tail with a face. This tail-head apparently has a crude brain that'll bite at anything approaching Girafarig from behind.
Design-wise, Girafarig being unassuming looking is a little bit the point, to make its rear end all the weirder by contrast. That said, I do feel like the dark end could be a bit weirder, somehow. Of course, there's the beta Girafarig which has its backside be a mirror image of the front, which I feel is a bit on the right track but isn't quite there either. I think it'd be cool if the tail was a bit more equal-footing with the head; making it bigger and longer, which would still denote that it's meant to be a tail, but still gives it even more presence.
Even then, it probably could be pushed even harder. We just think it'd be neat if Girafarig's butt was a little more out-there, like an abstraction of what an animal looks like as opposed to Girafarig being fairly grounded by comparison.
We dunno what's so "Psychic" about it either. Like, Normal for sure, it's because Girafarig itself is just a regular animal. But does that make its butt... Psychic, then? It looks like it aughta be Dark type, more than anything. Especially if it's characterized with biting things, and Dark's most famous moves, especially back the, were Bite and Crunch. Is my plurality analogy not too far off, and THAT'S where the Psychic type comes up?? Who knows.
But I can't help but have a bit of a soft spot for it. It's just this oddity in Gen 2 barely anyone remembers, not even my Gamefreak itself, it seems. It's little more than a horse-shaped giraffe in pajama pants and a Chain Chomp sticking out of its back end. There's just something so cute about that that gets me to like it in a way that's hard to put into words. Just another one of those Pokemon that I like in spite of how much I think it could be improved. Maybe it'll get a new evolution or regional variant that makes the half of it that's supposed to be weird more interesting, but until then, Girafarig's nice.
