982: DudunsparceLook, we get what people mean when they say they're disappointed with Dunsparce's new evolution. After the large influx of fakemon evolution ideas, probably one of the most popular Pokemon to make fake evolutions of, all of which depict Dunsparce overcoming its dopey-looking nature to become a sleek, cool, or sometimes even pretty serpentine dragon. Only for the this to finally happen in the real games after all these years, and what we get is a bigger Dunsparce with an extra lump added to its body.
Well too bad, I WIN.
Considering the path some evolutions added after the fact take, as much as I wanted Dunsparce to evolve, I was also VERY afraid of what they might do to the charming lil tsuchinoko. For every Farigiraf or Clodsire, it feels like we also get a couple Magmortars or Dusknoirs; Pokemon that I feel lose a ton of their original form's appeal.
Dudunsparce is practically the opposite of this, instead opting to just take what already worked and barely changed any of it. And arguably that's kind of the joke. Dunsparce was already a bit of a joke Pokemon, being a super-rare Pokemon that ends up looking very unassuming, and doesn't have anything going for it past being an ambitiously amusing user of Headbutt and Serena Grace. Giving it an evolution that looks cool, sleek, and badass would kinda undercut that, wouldn't it? So a joke of an evolution simply suits it best. Even to a point where its name is "*DUD*unsparce." If this was going to happen to ANY Pokemon, it SHOULD be Dunsparce!
It even has a stupid form gimmick, where very rarely it'll come with THREE segments instead of two. Almost as if to ascend the gag into godhood. And drive collector purists mad.
Yes, joke or not, it's inherently a cop-out. Not every Pokemon that stays charming throughout the whole line stays looking the same, but I dunno how to explain Dudunsparce's appeal other than you kinda just have to have a sense of humor about it. Be in on the joke. And also merely accept that Dunsparce is already perfect and doesn't need changing.
