Let's Talk About Pokemon - Hisuian Typhlosion

You felt your sins crawling on your back

Hisuian Typhlosion:

This game, rather than having new starters or even the Sinnoh starters, takes three starters from other Gens and brings them to Hisui instead. Cyndaquil is one of them, and all three of the starters, perhaps predictably, now have new forms to show off. Cyndaquil now mellowing out and apparently dealing with ghostly energy.

Our issue with base Typhlosion has always been that it's a bit on the generic side. A big badger with a flame shooting out of its neck and little else. Hisuian Typhlosion just feels better by having a bit more personality, especially in the face. Liking those tired-looking eyes.

It also brings in some more stylish ghostly flames, even having a few flame spots go around its neck as well. That's something that always felt like it was missing from Typhlosion anyway, was more emphasis on those flame spots. They're likely a reference to magatama beads, which are on bead necklaces said to possess supernatural energies.

It is otherwise kind of just Typhlosion, which is fine. While we figured starters with regional forms were an inevitability, we also never expected them to be a huge departure from their base forms either. And for the most part we're right, as all three of these Hisuian starters are mostly the same with a little different. Fair enough, gotta keep that starter marketability we suppose.

Personal Score: 8/10
