Once again time for a set of starters! The Treecko family is one we have a lot of fond memories with, with Gen 3 being up there as one of the more nostalgic generations for us. Treecko is an adorable little gecko guy, with its big yellow eyes and sucker-toes being some of its neater features. The pale orange is a surprisingly nice accent color for the whole line too, very lizard-ey, in a way. Its tails are a little non-descript though, and it doesn't have a lot signifying its affinity to Grass other than being the color green. But it is just plain cute as a fat-tailed gecko's tail!
If the prehistoric theme of the grass starters is your bag, Grovyle comes packing as a feathered dino, something like a raptor or deinonychus, even bearing leaves that look like feathers, which look really cool! See, ya "science ruined dinosaurs" weirdos? Who says feathered dinosaurs don't look cool? Its slimmer profile is neat, the only aspect of its design we don't like so much is that random green band across its belly.
The line is topped off with a cool dinosaur-lizard cross, continuing with the leaves = feathers feature and having a feathery, huge tail that even looks a bit like an evergreen tree or some kind of ivy. The one thing we wish Sceptile kept from Grovyle was the slimmer face and more feather-like arm-leaves, because here they moreso look like some cool arm-blades. It IS the Pokemon that popularized "Leaf Blade" as a move, but still. It's also missing out on the orange a bit.
It is nicer in overall personality though. It's like Treecko went from a pretty chill kid to an edgy teenager and then back to a much more laid-back adult. An adult who still collects swords, but is cooler about it.
Sceptile easily gets one of the better Mega forms, receiving a Grass/Dragon typing and gives it just the right amount of edge to feel like it's not trying way too hard. The addition of red we're a little unsure about, just given it's gone from a tertiary color to a secondary color and it's an agreesive contrast with the green.
What is badass about it though, is its tail. Now more evergreen-ey than ever, it can fire this tail and have it actually explode as if it were a missile! Lizards do actually have a defensive tactic where they forcibly detach their tail to confuse a predator while it runs away. Cool to have this represented in Pokemon as more offensive measure!
The Treecko family will always be one of my favorite starter lines to date. It's mostly because of my bias towards reptilians in general, especially because I'm a scalie myself. But I've always loved how laid-back and chill yet badass Sceptile looked. It's not my favorite starter, but it's definitely in the top five.
ReplyDeleteAs appreciators of Grass starters, for the most part, Sceptile's up there as one of the coolest ones, definitely!
