What Gen 3 brings us next for Legendaries is a strange pair. So similar, yet so different in energy. The first of which is Latias, a dragon in the shape of a jet plane of some kind. Which is also Dragon/Psychic type. A bizarre set of criteria for sure. Of course, we wish more of that traditional Psychic type strangeness bled through, but there's something so hard to dislike about Latias. Maybe it's the childhood bias speaking, since this USED to be one of our favorite Pokemon ever, but even afterward in a more now-oriented headspace, Latias' awkward proportions between the gourd shape and sleek, plane-like wings just finds something so uniquely likable among the other "just plain cute" riff-raff of designs. We still wouldn't say it excels past extraordinary, but it's cute, in a way that tickles the right buttons for all three of us.
Personal Score: 8.5/10
And Latios is a strange one. For the longest time we had no dang clue why Latios, a design almost entirely similar to Latias, was so much further down our list of Pokemon we like. And after a longass time of wondering, we think we finally realized what's up.
See, a plane-dragon is a silly design idea, and Latias' overall bodyplan is also silly. Latios, however, is trying to be the cooler older brother to Latias, and it just. Does not work. I mean, with works to SOME extent, cause the design isn't outright bad, but there definitely feels to be a contradiction between Latios wanting to look sleek and cool, but nonetheless being Latias-shaped. They do change its body shape in fairly subtle ways, but it's still a dragon with a design that's more goofy than cool or sleek. They could've done more to change it overall.
Personal Score: 6/10
Mega Lati@s:
...But then they throw two megas at the things and. They just don't do anything for us. They meld the two together in a way that's not particularly interesting, and they just kinda turn into design mush as they both have to be each other's megas at the same time. Now even Latias is trapped in the same awkward in-between Latios was in!
