One more odd, out-of-place baby Pokemon, this time for Wobbuffet. And it's cute enough as a baby form to Wobbuffet! With the funny expression, and we love how its arms look more like floppy ears here. Plus the big bulbous pimple it has straight on its forehead, just to make it more sack-like. The tail also still seems to be the actual Pokemon, but it has a single eye this time. Wynaut's a funny design, though it does unfortunately strike us as a little unnecessary.
Though it does add to Wobbuffet in some flavor ways. Wobbuffet seems to be based on a Japanese comedian, Sanpei Hayashiya, whose catchphrase was "So nansu, okusan." Or, "That's the way it is, ma'am" in Japanese, while placing his hand on his forehead. Wobbuffet's Japanese name is "Sonansu", an obvious parallel to this phrase, and we all know Wobbuffet's "thing" was the odd salute it does. Turns out it was a callout to Hayashiya!
The reason why we waited until now to bring this up is because Wynaut's Japanese name is "Sohnano", which translates to "Really?" or "Is that so?" Ergo, combine this with Wobbuffet and you get an endless back and forth that they've gotten into at some point in the anime, just telling each other "That's the way it is." "Really?" "That's the way it is." "Really?" "That's the way it is." "Really?" and so-on. It is comical how this gets hilariously lost in translation, so you just have a moment where Wobbuffet and Wynaut are just awkwardly muttering their names at each other for 20 seconds.
