Let's Talk About Pokemon - The Turtwig Family

Congratulations on passing Start! Here's 10 coins.

387: Turtwig

After a longer-than-intended break, it's time for Gen 4! Hopefully, we can wrap this Gen up before all of the official art of Gen 9 Pokemon is released so it doesn't have to go on hiatus again.

Naturally, we're starting off with the generation's grass starter, Turtwig! Which is easily one of the more precious starters so far, possibly even in series history. It may seem like a slight retread of Squirtle, but the more tortoise energy of this line is well appreciated. LOVE this guy's beaky face and little nubs for feet. And the little tree sprout on its head is an adorable cherry on top. Way more fun of a shelled starter fella.

Full Grotle!

388: Grotle

And keeping with series tradition thus far, Grotle here is themed after another prehistoric animal, looking like a cross between a tortoise and an ankylosaur! With the cartoony topper shell on its back now forming a more segmented hide, and the huge, exaggerated cheekbones looking like the spikes on the side of an ankylo's head.

It also gets little bushes on its back, a fun little detail acting as setup for the final stage. Grotle itself may have quite a bit of that "Starter middle-stage" energy, but it's better than most.

With this being an RPG, lemme guess? Yggdrasil, The World Tree?

389: Torterra

Then comes already the coolest of the three starters! It lost a bit of the ankylosaur in it, with the more tortoise-like shell, but it does have the head spikes and some more saurian shape to it. Still though, it has the segmented back. Just with a shell on top!

But most importantly, it reveals its gimmick, being the world-bearing turtle! Complete with a miniature landscape on its back, with a tree, "plains", and spiky boulders covered in some moss to look like a mountain range with a forest at its base. Super cool!! Torterra is easily one of the best fully-evolved starters. Rock solid design and the turtliest Pokemon out there.

Personal Score: 9/10
