Let's Talk About Pokemon - Hitmonlee and Hitmonchan

Pokemon battling? He just does it for kicks.

106: Hitmonlee

Since the two Gen 1 Hitmons are technically in the same family now, and even then they're kind of related, I'll go ahead and lump them together here.

Hitmonlee is one of Gen 1's more bizarre-looking Pokemon. Not based on any particular creature, Hitmonlee here is just Kicking: The Monster. It has legs that look and extend like vacuum hoses, which I want to headcanon that Hitmonlee has some air pressure build-up function that allows it to shoot its legs out real far. Its got the Pokedex entries that say it can stretch and compress its legs, but I don't recall seeing that ever represented ingame, or in any of Pokemon's media.

Either way, it's easily a Pokemon that sticks out due to how unique it is. While I'm not a super big fan of it, I can't really say I've seen a ton of characters that resemble Hitmonlee in any way, other than maybe the player character of Decap Attack. POSSIBLY an inspiration for Hitmonlee?

Personal Score: 6/10

Hitmonchan stole the punch line.

107: Hitmonchan

Hitmonchan ends up suffering from having too many “human” elements. There's plenty of Pokemon with the allusion to clothing, but in most cases, it still looks natural or at least looks like a part of their body. Hitmonchan here just straight up looks like it's wearing some DBZ armor and a skirt. But, as a counterpart to Hitmonlee, it does look like a monster embodiment of punching. The execution just seems off compared to Hitmonlee. It feels like it should've had extendable arms or something to counteract Hitmonlee's legs, but it just has boxing gloves and that's about it.

Personal Score: 5.5/10
