Let's Talk About Pokemon - Kabuto and Kabutops

Maybe I can help you kids out a little. With my... Poke Info Cards.

140: Kabuto

Omastar is cool and all, but between the two, the descendants of the Dome Fossil are even more up my alley. Being a trilobite certainly helps, because trilobites are just inherently super cool. But the WAY Kabuto is a trilobite is even neater. I love the little black beady eyes atop its shell, but those might not actually be eyes at all!! Because underneath its shell is, well, THAT. A jet-black body seemingly indicating a dark void with nothing peering out of it but the glow of much more sinister spot-eyes. Just change them to yellow and it'd practically look like a Heartless! It's just such a gorgeous design for how simple it is.

If it's so on top, why is it extinct???? Checkmate, atheists.

141: Kabutops

Kabutops, unfortunately, gets rid of the spooky eyes, nor does it even have a facade for eyes either way. It just has the much more usual triangular-shaped eyes, which is a bit of a shame. Thankfully, Kabutops is still cool in a few different ways. Like, if it isn't one of the sickest looking designs Gen 1 has on offer in general. Kabutops appears to be a reimagining of a trilobite, but as a land-dwelling predator, seemingly as a "what if" sort of design where trilobites became the apex predator on land once all the Cambrian ocean critters got their land legs.

I especially love the shape of its head, keeping true to the shape of a trilobite's head but also making it look badass as hell. I also really dig the layered exoskeleton segments hanging off its back, tipped off with a long, pointed tail. Along with keeping a more creepy face like Kabuto before it, I feel like Kabutops could've also used at least one extra pair of limbs, just given trilobites had dozens of legs. It's really good as is, but add those two things and it would've been perfect.

Personal Score: 8.5/10
