Let's Talk About Pokemon - Natu and Xatu

This must be that "Borb" everyone's been talking about

177: Natu

Natu's another bird, but this time interesting in that it attempts to look like a bird with as few shapes as possible. It's practically just the head of a bird, but with wings and feet! It does at least manage to come across amusingly, especially with the uncannily human-like eye it has. It really stands out in an interesting way. Not necessarily creepy, but still interesting.

I have no mouth, but I must scream.

178: Xatu

Xatu then goes with a much more obvious motif in its "Native American" totem-like appearance. How well it serves as a representation of said culture is a subject beyond my white ass, so I'm going to just judge it based on how good it looks as a pocket monster and leave that discussion to people that are more culturally intelligent than me.

That said, it is quite unique as far as bird creatures go. Even to this day, there's hardly any other bird Pokemon like it. It manages to make the design more complex while still adhering to Natu's ultra-simplified geometric design with little to its body other than a perfectly spherical head and a bell-shaped body. I also like the strange eye markings on its chest. They add just a little bit of alien-ness to the design to make it fit in with Psychic's "weird" aesthetic. Even if it just seems to be a false face and little more.

Personal Score: 7.5/10
