Let's Talk About Pokemon - Sunkern and Sunflora

Seems seedy

191: Sunkern

I commend the person that got “sunflower seed” to work as a Pokemon. Sunkern's not bad, just it's the start of a trope in Pokemon that's run its course a bit. All these little “fruit” or “seedling” Pokemon that are just said fruit or seed typically with little more than a pair of feet. Not that it's Sunkern's fault, or that all those Pokemon are bad, I just like the grass type and wish said Pokemon were like Sunkern and did something just a little bit differnet.

I like Sunkerns's overall shape, with its head sprouted open to reveal a plant inside. Considering its face is going to get moved up to said plant, is that a bit gruesome? That your whole, old "head" is shed to be replaced by a new one? Sunkern's biology is weird the more you think about it, and it's fun for it.

Personal Score: 6.5/10

You like the taste of brains, we don't like zombies.

192: Sunflora

Sunflora is cute, but I wish I could be more enthusiastic about it. I like sunflowers, but Sunflora just sadly doesn't deliver for me. Its face is nice, with the closed eyes and beaming smile. But at the same time... it's like, every anthropomorphized sunflower character I've ever seen. All it has that's really unique to it is its weirdly short stature. Which is... brave for a sunflower design I suppose? Because normally sunflowers are absolutely HUGE. Like, taller than people huge. I know technical limitations meant Pokemon had to stay feasible as sprites that could exist in the same window as every other Pokemon, but you could've so easily fixed this by now with a new regional form or something. One that makes Sunflora ACTUALLY super tall.

Optic Sunflower from Mega Man X8 has the right idea! Tall, slender shape, funny plant-hands, and that tube sticking out of his back? It's actually his neck! That's definitely a way you could've had Sunflora be long and "tall" while still keeping it reasonably sized to fit in a sprite box.

Personal Score: 6/10
