Let's Talk About Pokemon - Porygon 2

Version 2.2000.233 Patch Notes

233: Porygon 2

Porygon's entry on the evolution train is a neat one, taking the original Porygon and making a sequel out of it. Porygon 2: Attack of the Clones is rather literally a living software update, just being Porygon but better. Getting its graphical fidelity upgraded from a low-poly blocky thing to something more smooth. Suppose it would be fitting that this Pokemon came out just before the major console leap from N64 to Gamecube.

Porygon 2: Ripto's Rage also seems to be modeled after one of those plastic drinking birds, and has even been animated as such on more than one occasion, especially in the Stadium-adjacent games. Porygon 2: Yoshi's Island was also state to have been planned to be sent into space, but they forgot to program it with the ability to fly? Okay? Your guys' fault, then?

This is overall just a really inventive way to give a Pokemon a new evolution after the fact. Porygon literally got patched! It's honestly also a surprise no other digital Pokemon has been attempted thus far. Maybe they think it encroaches on Porygon 2: Return of Samus' vibe too much? Nonsense! There's plenty of odd little things you could make a completely coding-based Pokemon off of!

Between the last Porygon review and this review, Pokemon Legends Arceus released, having the Porygon line appear out of Space Time Distortions, essentially meaning they got sent back in time. This leads to some amusing input from Professor Laventon, who writes the game's Pokedex entries, where he elaborates further that these things, as you'd imagine, don't even have the facsimile of a biological makeup. It's also just funny to see poor Laventon try to parse these as if biological creatures.

Personal Score: 7.5/10
