Why'd it take so long to introduce the region's common bird? Who knows! Either way, it's a bit of a whiplash moment to go from the couple of weirdo mythical half-plant yokai creatures to something considerably more normal again.
Taillow is portrayed as a decent enough bird critter, being a bit of a return to a more pidgey-like appeal but as a little black bird that's surprisingly gutsy for its size.
And it really is a return to Pidgey in terms of design, the Barn Swallow is practically Taillow in real life!
Swellow, in turn, is just Taillow but more. Though the mullet is an odd addition. But this does denote the start of a trend that will go on for most generations as of now: that the common birds of a region are songbirds redesigned to look more menacing and like the birds of prey that, well, prey on them so much. It's a neat repeating trend only interrupted a couple of times, Hoothoot being one of them since owls are already birds of prey!
