Let's Talk About Pokemon - Chansey

I don't believe that 'mon has ever been to medical school.

113: Chansey

Chansey is striking in that it was a former icon of Pokemon. It still is to a lesser extent; it held on as Nurse Joy's signature Pokemon for the longest time. I'm not sure if Audino taking its place in the anime was just a Unova thing or not.

Oh well. Chansey introduces eggception. It is an egg taking care of an egg. Just like a lot of other Pokemon, Chansey is Egg, or at least to some extent, Motherhood: The Pokemon. Mainly characterized by its kindness and helping Pokemon in need. Though there seems to be conflicting messages about the egg it's holding. Some dex entries say that's its own egg, but others say it gives that egg and feeds it to Pokemon in need. Which is it?!

One similarity I never noticed until Bogleech noted it, but there's a decent likelihood Chansey is another among the ranks of Pokemon inspired by a creature rather than being directly based on it. Chansey and an Axolotl share the same overall color scheme, the axolotl's external gills and Chansey's "hair" are very similar, and both are known for their highly regenerative properties. That's really neat if so! Again, I've slowly grown a fondness for monster designs that feel like abstractions of a real-life creature rather than Chansey just straight being an axolotl.

Personal Score: 7/10
